What company might release our film

I've done some research on production companies and was successful and found a company which is called BFI (British Film Industry). The reason I've chosen this company is because of the movie Kidulthood the movie is produced by the BFI and as our movie is quite similar to Kidulthood I knew that this descision was not bad and could be interesting to the producation company.

My role on the opening sequence (Redemption)

Jay is a brutal thug from Germany who moved over to the UK a few years ago. He was living in a council estate with his parents. His mother was a drug addict and his father an alcoholic, Jay's mother died a few years later as result of taking huge doses of drugs. Jay was so depressed that he started to bunk school and taking drugs. With the age of 16 he left his father because he was really violent and not fit to be a father and started to live in a hostel and hanging around with wrong friends. Through the years he gained respect by others and he is a member of a gang of violent youths. Most of the guys are German and the gang is still growing and is getting popular for youngsters. The gangs signs are black bandanas and black clothes.

Things learned from the preliminary task

I have learned lots of things from the preliminary task such as keeping the actors in the frame while shooting a movie and also be organised and prepared for anything. I also started to realize that the planning is one of the main keypoints to make a movie. For the preliminary task we used the programme iMovie and after a few tries I got very confident with it and cutted the movie as smooth as I possibly could.

Preliminary Task 'Feed the fish'

Our team did a quite a good job in this task which we are proud of. It has lots of different shots and also a fade in it. The fade is used to create a flashback which all student in the class recognised. We used continuity editing which was a bit inaccurate at the beginning but we edited it more to make it more smooth.and at the end you could see the smoothness and continuity of the sequence. Our team looked at some student examples on the media drive of the school to get some inspiration which helped us a lot. We planned our sequence with storyboards and discussions as well. The only thing we had to improve were the shots because we zoomed to much out and you were able to see too much background.

Credits:
Danny, Kiran, Joe and Bailey.

What we still need to do for the opening sequence

  • Add music
  • Add titles
  • Add credits
  • Edit/ cut more smooth
  • Do some research for the genre
  • Make sure every cut is okay (if not we have to refilm it or think about how to fix it)
  • Do sound recording incase the sound is not very neat

Individual response to the idea/ thoughts about group choice

We each had different ideas on the setting, I've had the idea to go to a park near our school but when we started filming we realized the place wasn't good to work with so we had o decide on a different setting. Daniel G. had the idea of filming in manor park, it was a good place to film but it was too far. On the way of finding different parks Kiran had the idea of going to Blagdon park in New Malden it was a good choice because it was near, quiet and easy to film in. The only problem with this park is that parents and children can come inside the park so we had to stop filming. We had to go to the park during school time where children and parents would be at work and school. We filmed on two different days but we had to start over on the second day because change in the weather. It was easy for us to decide on what the characters would wear because it's in music and we're familiar with this situation so we definitely  knew what types of clothes they wear. We also got ideas by watching opening sequences and trailers for props and clothes for example we used the trailer of Adulthood which can be viewed above. We decided to let Jay wear a black hoody, trainers, black hat and a Bandanna this shows he's not looking for attention from the crowd and for Curtis we simply used casual clothes. On the setting we needed to find a blunt object to be used as a weapon. This is a significant object and it could carry on a story.

Own initial idea submitted to group for consideration

My ideas for the opening sequence were firsty that we should use two characters in a school commiting a crime which is escalating and has no good end for one of the persons I also came up with the idea that in another story there is a pro- and antagonist in the story who are having an argument. We finally used this rough idea and had to develop it as we needed to think about the story, props and also the location.

Planning meetings stuff from week 3 (JAN 16-20)

On the third week we finished up our very final storyboard which included a setting,  actors and acting change and we planned every single shot in detail and tried to commit every ideas we got. After that we decided what props to use, we decided black clothes, black hat and a black bandanna for the criminal character, we chose to use the black bandanna because it represents Jay's gang. He wears outfits that could be seen as trouble kid or criminal just to be seen on public and gain respect. The other character which is a casual young man wears normal clothes. The story begins with Curtis entering the park and sitting down the bench. As he was playing around with his phone he recognizes a mysterious man who was dressed in a uncertain way that he couldn't tell but the audience could. That mysterious who is called Jay was walking up to him in a swaggered motion to show his status. Curtis didn't take him serious and answered Jay's question sarcastically. Jay didn't take too well to his response and he was getting aggressive towards Curtis. The situation escalated which Curtis couldn't control, suddenly Jay punches him and it was clear to the audience that Jay wasn't messing around. Already after a few shots Curtis was lying helpless on the floor. Jay was really serious and picked up a bunt object, he strikes at Curtis with all his strength and the shot fades out. Jay called someone and started to talk in another language we placed subtitles at the bottom of the screen so the audience knows what he's saying, then you can hear a zip and a car door which Curtis won't realize but the audience will. And this will carry on the story. We decided to call the movie "Redemption" because we thought about a complex story which is not easy to tell, can Jay clear his sins?

Planning meetings stuff from week 2 (JAN 9-13)

We brainstormed a completely different idea to our first one, it involved a troubled teenage girl who found a friend that can relate to her but behind the computer he was a criminal he was acting kind to the girl and she trusted him. He was manipulating her and she didn't realize. The problem in this story was her religion which forbid her to be in a relationship with him. We felt this story wasn't exciting enough and we wanted it to be unique. During the planning we suddenly had an amazing idea which we could commit to and it involves a trouble kid which is played by Tawhir and a criminal thug which is played by Daniel Glazier. The story starts with a long shot at the bus stop in which Tawhir receives a text message from his friend saying: "Are you bunking lesson again blud?" He just ignored him and didn't care about him. He was waiting for the bus and catches it to an illusive park. On the ride we tried to film him and the scenery so that the spectator can make a picture of the setting. We also wanted add a special effect where he puts on his headphone and the music can be heard from the audience. When arrives he enters the park by jumping over a fence. The audience can tell he's a dodgy character by his action. In an over the shoulder you can see him taking out something what looks to be like an illegal substance possibly Marijuana. As he smokes the shot is changing from the over the shoulder shot to a medium in which you can see another character who is played by Daniel G. . He comes up to him and they started arguing and Daniel ran out of patience and set Tawhir straight. He punched and robbed him. On the next day Tawhir was eating in a fast food restaurant and as he was walking out he sees Daniel on a public high street Daniel recognizes him and ran away. Tawhir ran after him and Daniel ran into the back of a deserted building where he trips and crying for mercy, you can see the anger in Tawhir's face and the audience can tell that something is going to happen in the next few seconds. The camera focuses on the brick and this is a significant object as it will be a murder weapon. Tawhir picks it up and you can only see a shot where he drops brick and walks away. This idea was good but during we were filming we realized that it is hard to film on some places like the bus scene or the park because we needed permission to film there so after a few tries we went back to change the story a slightly bit. The basic idea was there and we wanted to make it enjoyable for the audience.

Planning meetings stuff from week 1 (JAN 4-6)

We were put into groups and my group consists of Daniel G. and Kiran. The first thing we did was brainstorming ideas for our storyboard and everyone came up with some good and useful ideas. The first idea for the storyboard was really good but we had problems to commit it because we didn't have the right have the right props and location for the story. To get inspiration we watched opening sequences and student examples. As we were doing the first story we did another story as backup just in case there was a problem. We brainstormed ideas for the second story as well which should be completely different from the first one.

Personal Response to the brief

At the beginning I was quite confident with this task and my group and me came up with different ideas for the storyboard. In the first few lessons it was hard to find a story which was easy to commit to. As soon as we finished our first story we didn't realize that it is going to be a bit harder than we thought. While we were finishing off the first story board we started a second one in case the first one fails. We couldn't really commit the first and the second idea because we needed the right location and many different props which we didn't have access to.  A few lessons later we decided to change the whole story into a different story which was our final idea because we had the props and location for it. At the first day of filming we realized the location wasn't a good place and the story was hard to commit after a few discussion during lessons we decided to change to story a slightly bit and change the location as well. Now we have the perfect location for our story and we already started filming we just need to finish it and we also finished the storyboard about a 100% .

Analysis of credits sequence

The endling credits start with the two main characters looking face to face and kissing each other in a close up then there's is a fade out and it says "D: It is written" which is the answer to a question at the very beginning of the movie. Now as the camera shows the credits in animations music starts to play and many actors appear to dance which is shown in a extreme longshot to show all actors and the envoirment. The genre of this movie is bollywood and like many bollywood movies the men and women wear traditional colour clothes. On the credtis you can sometimes see two actors (mostly a child and a mature person) which are the same characters in the story but two different actors in the real life. In this credits sequence you can also see that the director used many different shots and at the end of the sequence the two main actors leave the location and the shot fades out.

Analysis of titles sequence

This is the opening credits for the movie The shining and it starts off with an orchestrial background music and a extreme longshot in which you can see the envoirment we currently are. Fade ins and outs are used to signify that time is passing and the camera is focusing on a car which is driving on a mountin with an aerial shot as the video goes along the camera gets closer to the car and when the camera is almost at the car the credits appear the music starts to change as well and now it's a bit mysterious and eerie as well. As the car is driving to its destination there are many cuts and different locations until the last cut shows the destination with an aerial shot.

Star Wars opening sequence analysis

This is the opening scene of Star Wars it starts off with the title of the movie and the classic star wars tune which most of the people recognize. In the first bit there is a plenty of text and it is shown in the cosmos. As soon as the text ends the shot appears as a extreme longshot as you can see the cosmos and some planets. As the camera stops moving you can see two spaceships shooting at each other and now the audience should know that the genre of the movie is science fiction. The next shot shows the inside of the huge spaceship and you can see people dressed in monotonous clothes which are mainly grey, white and black and also three mashines that can communicate. The audience can guess that this plays in the future. The shots which are used are mainly mid shots and longshots. The pro- and antagonist use laser guns which are definitely a sign of a future object. In a extreme longshot you can see the small spaceship is trying to get in the big one and the orechstrial music is getting eerie, pensive and mysterious. After a little war between the pro- and antagonist in which the music is quite speedy and finally a black clothes guy with a mask comes in who seems to have an enormous power and the orchestrial music calms down but it still seems to be a bit eerie.

The Hangover opening sequence analysis

This is the opening sequence of the movie The Hangover it starts off with the production company introduction Then you can see the location we are currently on and the director used a lot of white colours and also at the beginning the audience can see a few guy picking up roses from a van, the credits starts to show as well.,  because of this people the audience could slightly guess what's this all about.with a fade in and out the scenario changes and you can see a close up of a white cake and then a wedding dress now the audience definetely know that this is about a wedding. The background music is very calm and classic. In the next couple of shots you can see people setting up chairs and the whole wedding. Now in the next shot you can see a woman which is looking out a window in a close up and she seemed to be worried/concerned about something. The next shot shows a woman who's sitting in front of a mirror which you can guess easily because there are lights around it and also someone brushing her hair. And suddenly someone calls her which she picks up imidietaly and surprised. The next shot is a cut and longshot in which you can see the husband who's in the desert with some other guys and they look dirty and lost. The longshot shows the envoirment and the situation the guys are at the moment. As the opening sequence goes on it tells that this guy is the future husband and going to get married in 5 hours but he's lost and says "yeah, that's not gonna happen" the title "The Hangover" appears and the opening sequence finished.

SAW opening sequence analysis

SAW opening sequence analysis

This is the opening sequence of the movie SAW by Liongate films and at the beginning you can see a man who wakes up in a bathtub and the envoirment is dark the character seems to be lost and he recognises that he's not the only one in that room and suddenly the light turns on and he sees a dead body with a gun and a recorder on the floor. There is another character in the room which is smeared in blood and chained to the wall like the first character. They seemed to be helpless and the envoirement which looks like a dirty old bathroom emphasises an unknown place which could be anywhere. The music is eerie and the colours are white to blue and very cold. The usage of the cold colours gives the movie the right sense of horror such as the handheld shots. In this opening sequence the use of P.O.V. was very effiicient as it shows the view and the feeling of beeing lost of the protagonist. Near the end there is a montage which shows that the person tried to remove the chain with many attempts.

Dead again opening sequence analysis

Dead again opening sequence analysis

This is the opening sequence of the movie Dead again. It starts with the credits first you can see the name of the movie and then the names of the actors between the credits there are some parts in which you can see newspapers with different headings and most of those stories are related to crime so this can give you a clue of what genre this movie is about. After the credits you can see a character sitting in a prison cell and he's singing while someone else is cutting his hair. The movie is in black and white which the spectator can guess that this movie is playing in the past. The director uses low key lighting. Then suddenly a man comes in and he wears a suit which looks quite expensive he also has a hat and a fag. They are talking to each other and as the first character walks out the other character reads a newspaper which was on the table which says "Strauss execution today" and there is a picture of the first character on it so now the audience knows that the character's name who just walked out is Strauss. While the other character is reading the article the character recognises that the scissor is missing and runs out. In a close up you can see that Strauss is holding the scissor in his hands at the end of the corridor there is a women and Strauss pulls the scissor to stab her. As soon as he hits her suddenly the movie becomes coloured and you can see that the women which got stabbed wakes up and it was just a dream. At the end of the sequence you can see the women wakes up, very stressed and it's dark outside and very stormy outside. The music during the movie is orchestrial and it's very pensive and eerie.

Children of Men opening sequence analysis

This is the opening of children of men the sequence starts with some credits at the beginning and a news report the people in the scene are all dressed grey coloured and not really colourful. A man which is the main charackter appears and tries to reach the counter. In the news report they talk about the worlds youngest person which died with an age of 18. The news report also always mentions that he's the youngest person in the world so it gives the spectator a little hint that there is no pregnancy anymore or another big problem. In the news report it tells you the year (2009-2027). As the main charackter walks out you can see the current date at the bottom now you know that this movie is playing in the future. Many things like windows and bus advertisments are animated which gives you a little touch and feeling of science fiction. While he's walking down the street the camera is tracking him and turns to the opposite site to be fixed on the charackter and the coffee shop as well because there is going to be an explosion. Now everybody is screaming and you can hear a plinky sound which shall let the spectator feel like they are in the scene and their hearing is decreased through that explosion.
